Semester Portfolio Assessment

It is important for students to assess their portfolios. This process
helps them to evaluate the extent to which they have grown in terms of
mastery of curriculum objectives. It enables them to identify both their
strengths and weaknesses and make necessary adjustments in order for
them to excel academically. This paper is based on the assessment of a
student’s semester portfolio. It is a highlight of the student’s
writing strengths and weaknesses based on his five essays. The areas
highlighted are: audience, organization, and style.
Process Analysis Essay: How to become a Habitat Homeowner (100%)
In this particular essay, the writer has demonstrated excellent writing
skills. That is why he has scoped a mark of 100%. In terms of
organization, the author has given a good background to the paper by
identifying his situation as the author of the paper. The topic of the
paper is well chosen and the purpose of the analysis is well stated. The
audience of the paper is also well identified since the information
given out can be suitable for one’s peers. The writing styles are well
used by the author. The paper has no many language mistakes and the
grammar usage is almost perfect. The paper also follows MLA writing
conventions.
Short Answer Essay Question Essay: Habitat for Humanity (95%)
In this essay, the writer has demonstrated that he is capable of writing
a good paper. He has organized his paper well by giving an appropriate
background about himself as the author and identifying an appropriate
occasion where the essay can be applied. The purpose of the paper is
well stated and it is compatible with the topic chosen. In terms of
writing styles, the writer has done well and has followed the MLA
writing conventions. The essay is short, it is clear and comprehensible.
However, somebody might argue that given such a serious issue as
environmental conservation, the entire community would have served well
as the audience of the essay rather than a single individual.
Cause and Effect Essay: Habitat for Humanity (64%)
In this essay, the audience is not well identified. A more encompassing
and more relevant audience is needed. A good example is the entire
community since the issue dealt with in this paper is likely to benefit
the entire community than just individuals. In terms of organization,
the essay has a good introduction, body and conclusion. Although the
essay is somehow well organized and it has good transitions, its topic
is incompatible with its purpose. It is also important to note that the
“cause” stated on the title of the essay is not dealt with. In terms
of styles, the essay flows well. MLA format is fairly used.
Definition Essay: Habitat for Humanity (66%)
In this essay, the choice of the audience is not good since the study is
meant to explain how volunteering has been defined over time (for three
years). This is an issue which is good not only for the “self”
audience, but also for other people in the society in order for them to
understand what it means to be a volunteer. The organization of the
paper is good since the purpose and occasion are well stated. However,
the topic of the paper is slightly not compatible with the purpose of
the paper. In terms of writing styles, the format of the essay is
somehow not good due to the bold fonts. However, MLA conventions have
been appropriately applied.
Film Analysis Essay: Slumdog Millionaire (57%)
In this particular essay, the writer has not done a good work. That is
why he has scored the lowest marks compared to what he has scored in
other essays. In terms of the audience, the choice of a professional
audience in this case is appropriate since the analysis of the movie
Slumdog Millionaire can be used in inspiring people of different
professions to success. However, in terms of organization, most parts of
the essay are not generally well organized. The purpose of the essay is
not coming out clearly since it does not show why the explicit meaning
of the film has to be explained. The occasion is also not well chosen.
In terms of writing styles, it needs to be pointed out that the essay is
too short and it does not flow well. The essay is organized well with a
clear purpose and it flows well. It also needs to be pointed out that
the usage of bold fonts lowers the quality of the essay.
Conclusion
This particular portfolio assessment is important in that it shows how
the student has grown as a writer. From the assessment, it can be noted
that the student is not progressing well. His first essay had the
highest score while the last essay he wrote was awarded the lowest
score. This shows a negative growth for the writer. The portfolio is
also important in that it can help the writer to improve the areas where
he is weak. For instance, the portfolio enables the writer to understand
that he needs to improve on the criterion he uses in choosing his
audiences. Although he has improved on this in the last essay, previous
scores show that he needs to put more effort.
